This painting was one of the first in my 'black and white' mood and was inspired by a black and white postcard entitled 'Lost Dreams' by Charles Rolf (1983). I found the scene very relaxing and the figure walking slowly along the path seemed to be just wandering aimlessly. So that's why I called it 'Contemplation'. I began by covering the canvas with Gesso and a mix of glues and applied it roughly with a sponge to give it texture. Then I painted the details allowing for tonal changes through a spectrum of greys. I kept things in the foreground darker than those in the mid and backgrounds to give a sense of distance.
