I painted this during the summer when lockdown was first lifted. I bot them from my local supermarket where they seemed to be beckoning me to purchase them so I did. I was attracted to the bright colours and the size of the heads of these friendly flowers. I wanted to capture it in oils in the style of Van Gogh. A characteristic of sunflowers is that they will turn their heads to look up at the sun and when there is no sun, the heads turn inwards to eachother and they huddle together. Sunflowers signify solidarity, friendship, support and community - all the things that have become so important in recent hard times.
