This painting is of a white flower called 'Narcissus' which is part of the daffodil family. I painted it from a photo I took as I did one of my usual walks around where I live. I photographed the flower set against a wooden fence but, in this painting, I made the background a solid dark brown because I didn't want fences to distract from the main subject and so that the rest of the flower would pop out to appear almost 3D. I covered the canvas in gesso and gave texture to the surface with a sponge. When dry, I then applied a thick layer of brown paint and when dry I used a light beige colour to compose the flower and the leaves, before working on the details. It has a botanical feeling to it, but it is an interpretation rather than a direct representation of the flower.
