Oil on canvas

This painting was inspired by a photo I saw at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park Gallery. It was a monochrome mirror photo and I thought it was very atmospheric and wanted to capture the same atmosphere. It was difficult to see what season the photo was taken in or trying to depict, so I chose to set this in a frozen winter landscape which gave me the opportunity to use monochrome colours and tones of black and white. I used oil paint because I could layer, smudge and adjust the tones on the canvas to suit the atmosphere I was trying to create. Also, this medium allowed me to create a mirror-like effect on the frozen lake in front of the house and subsequently the reflection.
